Today was mostly a driving day, 3+ hours on a 4x4 to get back to paved roads, and another 5+ hours in the minibus to get to our riad in Taroudannt.
In the morning we had a quick breakfast which was the least inspiring breakfast we had to date in Morocco. Essentially it was left over bread from dinner, some jam and other spreads to put on the bread, and coffee/tea/juice. Even the fresh squeezed orange juice that we have had many places was missing. We said goodbye to the beautiful dunes next to our camp that were a reddish brown in the early morning light.
We had a 3+ hour 4x4 ride over rough terrain to get back to a paved road and meet up with the minibus. We met the bus at the small town of Foum Zguid. That town is about 135 miles (218 km) via paved road from where we had been dropped off yesterday at M'Hamid. The terrain on the way back was varied. Mostly we were on flat land, driving between 2 parallel mountain ranges. In some place there was a defined single track "road", while in other areas vehicles fanned out over an area of a mile plus wide.
The route was mostly hard packed ground with rocks, intermixed with some small sandy sections. We make a couple of stops, including one site where there were a number of fossils in the rocks.
The desert was a wonderful experience, but we were happy to get back to smooth roads and the relatively spaciousness of the minibus.
The balance of the afternoon was spent driving, with a stop for lunch and a couple short breaks. The vegetation started out very sparse, but became more abundant the further west we drove. Late in the afternoon we started to notice lots of argan trees - this region is famous for its argan oil.
We finally arrived at our riad - it have a beautiful courtyard and pool with lots of pretty flowers. You would never think that there was a nice place there as it was several hundred yards (meters) down a dirt road with abandoned homes, etc. However, one we got there and stepped inside the doors it was beautiful .
